PGP EM: Post Graduate Program in Energy Management

One-year, full time Residential program for degree holders offered from Hyderabad (Shamirpet)

The concerns of increasing global energy demand and climatic changes are pushing decision-makers to plan, generate and utilize energy in an efficient manner. All interventions pertaining to policies/regulations/reforms for production, provision and consumption of energy require coherence with international commitments to the recent Conference of Parties (COP26). Correspondingly, there has been a remarkable transition from conventional energy sources to non-conventional energy sources in several developing and developed countries. For instance, as per India’s commitment, India needs to double the current energy capacity (399 GW) by 2030 as well as ensure that 500GW is produced through non-fossilized sources. Thereby, adoption of non-conventional energy sources and improvements in conventional energy resources are indispensable for inculcating a sustainable energy ecosystem. This transition in our approach to meeting the energy demand has casted attention on the concept of energy management. Energy management involves monitoring, controlling, and conserving energy in various stages of the projects (i.e., planning, construction, generation, transmission and distribution (GT&D), and operations and maintenance (O&M)). The scope of energy management includes but not limited to sectors such as energy source exploration, throughput management, power generation, transmission, distribution, and consumers such as agriculture, industries, services, residences, and mobility. This diverse scope of energy management epitomizes the interdisciplinary nature of the professional skill set required for this role. In consequence, an increase in the skill gap in energy management is also expected, which significantly affects the transitional developments in the energy sector. Energy management professionals play a pivotal role in the project delivery, operations and maintenance and require a blend of technical, economics, financial and management skills.

NICMAR’s post-graduate program in Energy Management (PGP EM) offered from the Hyderabad campus is structured to attain the technical, economic, financial, and managerial prerequisites encompassed in this discipline. The program follows an interdisciplinary approach that targets engineering/sciences/architecture graduates to address this skill deficit in energy management. The first semester of PGP Energy Management focuses on technical, economics, financial and management aspects. In the second semester, the candidates focus on technical and management aspects. The technical modules concentrate on basics and advancements in energy sources, policies, reforms, regulations, project management, energy conservations, auditing, and data analytics. The economics and financial modules focus on projects' viability and financial requirements whereas the management modules focus on business communication and strategic management. The program also allows a four-week industry internship, a seminar module and final project work.

The PGP Energy Management program’s objective is to impart knowledge and train young graduates from multi-disciplinary fields and develop them into competent professionals who can potentially manage projects in challenging environments in the energy sector. The program intends to develop the competency to oversee and manage every stage of the energy sector project from planning, construction, generation, transmission and distribution (GT&D), and operations and maintenance (O&M).

Program Objectives

The program intends to meet the following objectives

  • Develop an inter-disciplinary understanding of the basics and advancements in the energy sector and manifest the need for energy management.
  • Apply principles of energy economics and financing in appraisal of planning, construction, generation, transmission and distribution, and operations and maintenance of energy ecosystems.
  • Inculcate managerial skills required for steering energy performance in agriculture, industries, services, residences, and mobility.
  • Apply analytical techniques in auditing the interventions for energy efficiency and conservation.
  • Cultivate professionalism, ethical approach, and interpersonal skills for achieving a sustainable balance between energy, society, and environment.
