India aims to become the third largest economy globally by reaching a GDP of US$ 5
trillion in the next three years and aspires to achieve a GDP of US$ 7 trillion by 2030.
The recent union budget has allocated US$ 13 million to be spent alone on infrastructure
projects during FY 2024-25. The Indian government’s focus on infrastructure projects is
further enhanced with an expected total investment of US$ 1.7 trillion by 2030.
This massive expenditure on projects requires a great deal of project management skills
on the part of those executives and managers who are supposed to plan and execute
various engineering and non-engineering projects on behalf of government companies and
private enterprises. It is expected that project managers in India must be well-versed
in working in different phases of project management like project initiation, project
planning, project execution, project monitoring & controlling, and project closing.
Apart from these, they should have general management skills like communication,
leadership, team building, negotiation and basic human resource management (HRM) skills.
As far as project management education in India is concerned, it is in the nascent stage
with very few institutions offering full-time post-graduate programmes in project
management. NICMAR University offers a two-year full-time MBA programme in Advanced
Project Management (APM) under one of its schools – the School of Project Management.
The
focus of the MBA APM programme is on large and complex engineering and non-engineering
projects, which require specialised human resources. The Programme adopts a
multidisciplinary approach comprising project management and systems engineering so that
budding project managers are prepared to work in different sectors of the industry.
Industry-ready project professionals are employed in oil and gas, software development,
manufacturing, energy, infrastructure and construction including clients, contracting
and consulting organizations. Such trained manpower is also required by various
organizations for education, health care and management of rural projects. The MBA APM
addresses the techno-managerial needs of various projects in different sectors of the
industry. Graduates from different streams like Engineering, Planning, Architecture,
Computer & IT, Science, Commerce, Arts, Pharmaceutical and Agriculture after completing
this Programme gain multidisciplinary exposure to the working of modern projects.
MBA APM is a unique programme and hardly any other reputed institute offers this
programme in India. The curriculum is reviewed and updated every year to incorporate the
latest advancements in project management to build competencies in diverse areas to
enhance employability and entrepreneurial drive among students.
