‘The purpose of education is to build a happier society. We need a more holistic approach that promotes the practise of love and compassion.’ – His Holiness, Dalai Lama
Our country has an extensive and rich tradition of multidisciplinary and holistic education from ancient times, a fact represented through the Gurukul system of learning, ancient texts, and learning records. Along the way, these records and traditions got altered and the patterns of education limited itself to textual knowledge. NEP 2020 envisions the incorporation of aesthetic, physical, social, emotional, and moral learning in an integrated curriculum transcending various disciplines towards the development of well-rounded citizens that can lead the country in the era of rapid technological advancement while being rooted in the humanness of life.
NICMAR University (NU) has been encouraging the vision of holistic development of its student and academic community through a multitude of community service engagements, value-based courses, and environmental sensitivity. Our programs have incorporated Indian educational value-based courses that enrich the intellectual, emotional, societal, environmental, and spiritual development of the student community. NU programs have holistic and multidisciplinary courses on environmental sensitivity that allow students to work towards shaping a sustainable world by taking accountability of their actions, energy usage, and reduction of carbon footprint; social immersion and engagement programs that allow them to engage with the underprivileged and marginalized communities, finding innovative community-based solutions; creative arts and literature courses to feed the desires of their soul by engaging in appreciation of life and its complexities; holistic development through yoga-based spiritual learning; community service camps that allow students to think beyond their limited selves and be of service to others, etc.
The objective through all these efforts is to contribute to a world where future citizens will have broadened perspectives and think about how their actions contribute towards the creation of a cleaner, better world filled with love and compassion that nurtures not just the mind but also the soul. NU has weaved these holistic and multidisciplinary courses in its program tapestry towards the creation of individuals who will shape peaceful, tolerant, inclusive, and sustainable societies. We are confident that this foundation will help our students continue the rich tradition of this esteemed institution by being trailblazers in their profession and community.
Warm regards,
Professor Anil Kashyap,
Director General, NICMAR
